Ground Rules

Ground Rules is a large-scale accordion-fold book, made with handmade cotton rag paper, watermarks, letterpress-printed text, and hand-sewing that makes a mark throughout each section of the book and binds the pages together.
With Park Factors, these books bring together archival research, writing, and image and form-making to examine unpredictability through stories from caring for my mother while she had lung cancer. Ground Rules builds on baseball team owners’ visions of empire and efforts to control playing conditions, umpires’ efforts to make and enforce rules to manage game-play, and cancer researchers’ forays into creating pathways for funding cancer care through a “war on cancer,” to examine fine lines between being in and out of control.
